Cockroach control is essential at your home as they carry many diseases such as food poisoning and allergies. Cockroaches have been identified as a main reason for spreading allergies, asthma, eczema, especially in urban areas. The health risk is particularly high in homes with children and elderly or those fighting illnesses.

Beyond the health risks, cockroaches are pests which no-one wants to see in their homes or work places. They cause contamination and can produce an obnoxious odour that taints food and objects which they come in contact with. If the conditions are good, and temperatures sufficient. They are highly resilient and have developed resistances to a number of insecticides. A quick response is therefore essential and pest control is necessary to ensure that cockroach infestations do not go out of control or spread to neighbouring properties. They start to spread around the Premises rapidly, can become unavoidable and can be sighted almost every where around the House such as kitchen areas, behind dishwashers, microwaves and stoves. Cockroaches breed in warm and humid conditions and can spread in no time.

There are 4 common type of cockroaches:

German, American, Australian and Continental

Species of cockroaches:

There are two mains species of cockroaches found in houses: the German cockroach , and the American cockroach. German cockroaches are mostly found in kitchens or pantry area and can be found in the bathrooms. American cockroaches are often found in homes but are sometimes found in drains and sometimes behind hot water system.

German Cockroach:

Notorious for their world-wide distribution, German cockroaches are easily identifiable by 2 dark longitudinal stripes on their pronotum. Adults grow to approximately 12 – 15mm in length.

Lifecycle:

Females carry 35 – 40 eggs in an ootheca (egg case) until they are ready to hatch.
Hatch in 1 month.
Generally 3-4 generations per year.

Habitat:-

Most commonly found indoors.
Prefers wet, humid conditions and are typically found in kitchens and bathrooms in homes and commercial properties.

The American Cockroach:-

Periplaneta Americana: It is the largest cockroach in homes and premises. It can measure up to 4.5 cm. And is dark reddish in color. They have clearer areas in their pronotum, developed wings and are capable of flying.

Habitat: it inhabits the subsoil and sewage system. Their flight capacity allows them to reach higher areas, being common to find them in food preparation areas.

Food: Omnivorous par excellence.

lifecycle:

The ootheca (egg case) containing up to 16 eggs is carried by the female for several days before being deposited. Sometimes cemented down and tend to be grouped.

Hatch in 1 – 2 months.

Nymphs usually develop in 6 -12 months, but it can take up to 15 months.

Reproduction: By ootecas (capsules) containing between 13 and 15 embryos, producing an ootheca every 30-60 days. Newborns can reach sexual maturity in 23 weeks. An adult can live for almost a year and a half, with their reproductive potential above 800 descendants a year.

Access routes: Generally they come from the subsoil and exterior drainage and their capacity of flight allows direct access through windows and terraces.

Their ability to fly allows them to move quickly through the air from one area to another, making it difficult to control them.
